Somer Toprak BBiomedSc (UMelb), BOptom (UMelb), Oc Ther
Somer grew up in Melbourne, Victoria. He became short-sighted in the latter years of primary school, which ignited his interest in how the eyes work (and don't work). He completed a degree in Biomedical Science at The University of Melbourne (immunology major). In seeking a career that combined his love of science, genuine interest in the eyes and the desire to be more involved in the community, he naturally gravitated towards Optometry. On completion of his Optometry degree at the University of Melbourne he was among the first cohort of Optometrists who entered the profession with full therapeutic endorsement. Somer worked in Warrnambool as an Optometrist for 5 years, after which he decided to travel and work in many places around Australia. His work involved helping other Optometrists in need of relief work, and filling services in areas of need. While mainly concentrating on regional and rural Victoria, this work also carried him to South Australia and as far as Darwin. He found that eye care needs varied greatly depending on the region. After having grown in love with the South West of Victoria, Somer and his wife, Nadia, decided to settle in Warrnambool and open Somer Toprak Optometrist. Somer specialises in ocular disease diagnosis and management (glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes), contact lenses (he wears them himself) and children's eye care. Somer also specialises in treating urgent eye problems such as foreign bodies and eye infections.
